  • Ronwen Williams could not replicate his quarter-final heroics as Nigeria opened the scoring
  • Victor Osimhen won the penalty that enabled Super Eagles captain to convert from the spot
  • William Troost Ekong put his side ahead after South Africa missed several first-half chances

Nigeria looked set for their eighth AFCON final save for a crazy few minutes

William Troost-Ekong converted a 67th-minute penalty to give the Super Eagles the lead.

South Africa held their breath after Mothobi Mvala brought down Victor Osimhen and referee Amin Mohamed Omar pointed to the spot but 20 minutes later the tables turned.

Ronwen Williams had saved four penalties in the quarter-final against Cape Verde but the Super Eagles captain cooly passed the ball down the middle of the goal as Williams committed to his left.

Victor Osimhen seemed to have settled the tie in the 85th minute but VAR pulled the referee Omar to the monitor and he gave a penalty in the opposing box.

The 2023 CAF Player of the Year's tap-in was chalked off thanks to a foul on Percy Tau in the opposing box at the beginning of Nigeria's counter-attack.

Teboho Mokoena converted and the match entered its frantic final moments. With only a handful of minutes left, South Africa won a free-kick in a speculative position.

Mokoena whipped in a fierce shot that bounced just short of Nwabali, who parried the ball into Khuliso Mudau's path. With the freedom of Bouake, Mudau left fans clutching their hair as he blazed over from 10 yards out.

Mudau's teammates, the Bafana Bafana coaching staff and everybody watching at home felt a collective despair that all hoped would not come back to haunt them.

The match went to extra time and neither team managed to secure a winner. Grant Kekana conceded a 117th-minute free-kick, receiving a straight red for being the last man.

The match went to penalties but Williams was unable to replicate his heroic and South Africa crashed out.

Chippa chairman backs Nwabali

Sports Brief recently reported on Chippa United's chairman publically backing his Nigerian goalkeeper.

South Africa and Nigeria went back and forth as soon as their AFCON 2023 semi-final clash was confirmed.

Siviwe Chippa then released a controversial statement saying he would be supporting the Super Eagles.
