  • Historical statistics do not worry Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams
  • South Africa face Nigeria tonight in a crucial AFCON 2023 semi-final encounter
  • The Sundowns man single-handedly secured the team's victory against Cape Verde

South Africa's national team skipper, Ronwen Williams, has confidently shrugged off Nigeria's historical dominance as they gear up for a pivotal Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final showdown tonight.

The highly anticipated clash between Bafana Bafana and the Super Eagles is set to unfold at the Bouake Stadium at 9 pm West African Time, with the winner advancing to face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or the hosts, Ivory Coast, in the final.

Despite Nigeria's formidable track record against South Africa, which includes seven victories, five draws, and just two losses in their 14 encounters, Williams remains undeterred.

"There are many stats against us in this tournament, but we've shown that numbers don't determine the game's outcome. While we can't erase the past, we can shape the future," said Williams, as quoted by Independent Online.

The 32-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper played a pivotal role in securing Bafana's semi-final berth, showing remarkable prowess by saving four out of five penalty kicks in the post-match shootout against Cape Verde.

The win marked a significant breakthrough for Hugo Broos' men, propelling them into the AFCON semi-finals for the first time since 2000.

Williams dedicates performance to late brother

The achievement holds special meaning for the Williams family, who dedicated the victory to his late brother, Marvin, a fellow football enthusiast tragically lost in a car accident in April 2010.

Hazel, Ronwen's mother, underscored the emotional resonance of the victory, noting Marvin's shared passion for football.

"He did it for his boetie [brother]," Hazel told TimesLive.

Despite accolades for his performance, Williams deflected praise onto his teammates, stressing the collective effort that propelled their success.

His accomplishment also matched compatriot Andre Arendse's record during the 1996 tournament in South Africa.

The two teams last met in the AFCON semi-finals in 2000, with Nigeria 2-0 winners thanks to a brace from Tijani Babangida. Jose Peseio's men are playing in a record 15th AFCON semi-final but have only progressed from one of their last six.

Williams downplays personal glory

Sports Brief reported when Bafana Bafana captain, Ronwen Williams, deflected praise despite his Cape Verde performance.

The Sundowns goalkeeper was voted the Man of the Match.

Williams remains focused on the team's collective effort, stressing unity and determination.
