Goalkeeping Mistakes In Premier League History

5: Vincente Guaita vs Sheffield United – 01/02/2020

While goals from corners can be thrilling, they lose their charm when they occur like this. In a match against Sheffield United in early 2020, Crystal Palace suffered a significant setback from an Oliver Norwood corner. Norwood sent a curling ball into the box, which seemed to be safely gathered by goalkeeper Vincent Guaita—until it wasn't.

Guaita inexplicably dropped the ball, allowing it to roll over the goal line. Although the goal might have already been in play, it was challenging to discern before this notable case of fumbled handling. This single goal proved decisive in the game's outcome.

4: Ben Foster vs Norwich City – 12/05/2013

In May 2013, during a match between Norwich City and West Brom, a magnificent pass from Wes Hoolahan launched Grant Holt toward the goal. Fortunately, Ben Foster was positioned to intervene. However, it seemed Foster may have left his contact lenses behind that morning. His attempted clearance saw him leaping a foot into the air before completely missing the ball.

This blunder allowed Norwich City to notch their second goal out of four in the game. Adding insult to injury, Holt even had time to celebrate with a kiss to his wrist and a gesture to the fans before calmly slotting the ball into the net. A display of utter goalkeeping folly.

3: Ian Walker vs Bolton – 10/02/2004

During a match between Bolton and Leicester City, striker Kevin Davies connected with a free kick from Youri Djorkaeff in the Leicester City penalty area. Fans initially believed that Leicester's keeper, Ian Walker, had successfully smothered the weak shot.

However, what followed was a series of unfortunate events. Walker dropped the ball mid-roll, causing it to ricochet around his body. Eventually, he inadvertently nudged it over his own goal line with his feet. The scene resembled a slapstick comedy, akin to a Laurel and Hardy sketch. Walker's dejected expression spoke volumes, encapsulating the entire debacle.

2: Gary Walsh vs Manchester United – 13/01/2001

Even elite athletes succumb to pressure at times. During a match, Bradford City goalkeeper Gary Walsh, under pressure from Teddy Sheringham, attempted to clear the ball out of danger. However, he completely mishit it, inadvertently allowing Sheringham to capitalize with an easy finish.

What made matters worse was that Walsh had successfully thwarted Manchester United's attacks for 72 minutes prior to this blunder. Unfortunately, this one mistake proved to be the turning point, as the opposing team scored two more goals before the match concluded. Such is the cruelty of football at times

1: Peter Enckelman vs Birmingham City – 16/09/2002

During a match against newly-promoted Birmingham City early in the 2002/2003 season, Aston Villa defender Olof Mellburg took what appeared to be a routine throw-in. He aimed to pass the ball directly to his goalkeeper, Peter Enckelman, expecting him to distribute it forward. However, things did not go as planned. Enckelman failed to control the ball, allowing it to slip past him and into the back of the net. The goal was deemed valid as the ball had brushed Enckelman's studs on its way in. Villa ultimately suffered a 3-0 defeat, and Enckelman's blunder is remembered as one of the worst in league history. Despite assertions that he never made contact with the ball, the Finnish goalkeeper remains defined by this mistake to this day.
