FootballAndre Onana a Strong Contender for Premier League Golden Glove Despite ‘Poor Season’
- The Premier League Golden Glove race is heating up
- Andre Onana is a strong contender to clinch the award
- The Cameroon international kept a clean sheet against West Ham on Sunday
Andre Onana may be having a frustrating debut season with Manchester United, but one Premier League stat suggests the goalkeeper is not getting enough credit for his work.
The 2023 Champions League finalist was signed by the Red Devils from Inter for €51 million, securing a reunion with Erik ten Hag, who previously managed him at Ajax.
Replacing the long-serving David de Gea was always going to be an uphill task for Onana, who learnt the hard way that the Premier League can be unforgiving.
A series of high-profile mistakes from the 28-year-old saw Manchester United crash out of the Champions League, while their Premier League campaign in 2023/24 is also in tatters.

According to the Premier League website, Onana has conceded 32 goals in 23 Premier League games in, stats that look extremely worrying on paper.
But despite the so-called ‘poor season’ being experienced by the Cameroon shot-stopper, he is somehow in pole position to clinch the Golden Glove.
Golden Glove standings
Onana was back in United’s starting XI on Sunday, February 4, against West Ham after only making one appearance for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.
His latest clean sheet sent his tally for 2023/24 to seven, which is level with Liverpool’s Alisson, whose team is top of the table.
The leader in the Golden Glove race currently is Everton’s Jordan Pickford, who has been crucial for the Toffees in their battle to avoid relegation after a points deduction. Pickford has eight clean sheets from 23 games.

FootballWhile it is still too early to predict how the Golden Glove race will go, it is quite impressive to see Onana having a genuine shout to win the award, which was last won by his predecessor, David De Gea, in 2022/23.
De Gea managed an impressive 17 clean sheets last season, helping United to finish in third place. According to Transfermarkt, only De Gea, Alisson and Manchester City’s Ederson have won the Golden Glove since 2018.
Here are the goalkeepers with the most clean sheets so far this season:
