Ronwen Williams' heroic penalty saves against Cape Verde helped South Africa book their spot in the semi-final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

After the game, South African players led by Percy Tau sang and danced to the popular South African song Jerusalema with fans to celebrate the massive win.

Bafana Bafana and Cape Verde could not score after 120 minutes of action. Williams and Cape Verde veteran goalie Vozinha made spectacular saves in regulation time, forcing a penalty shootout.

Williams saved penalties from Bebe, Willy Semedo, Laros Duarte and Patrick Andrade. South Africa also missed two penalties but escaped with a 2-1 win, per BBC.

After the game, Bafana Bafana players went to the stands to celebrate with some of South Africa's fans who made it to Ivory Coast. Master KG's hit song Jerusalema was playing in the background.

Percy Tau greeted some of the fans in the stands. Hugo Broos' side are returning to the AFCON semis for the first time since 2000, per Afrik Foot.

Williams sends South Africa to semis

Sports Brief earlier reported that South Africa goalkeeper Williams sent Bafana Bafana into the semi-final of the 2023 AFCON following an impressive show in the penalty shootouts.

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper produced splendid saves in regulation time to keep the 1996 champions in the game.

Williams produced one of the best displays in penalty shootout history by keeping out four Cape Verde penalties.

Nigeria vs South Africa preview

Sports Brief also previewed the Nigeria vs South Africa semi-final showdown set for Wednesday, February 7.

The Super Eagles are yet to lose in this year's AFCON, registering two wins and a draw in the group stage before beating Cameroon and Angola in the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, South Africa recorded a win, a draw and a loss in the group stages before beating Morocco in the last 16.

Nigeria eliminated South Africa in the 2019 AFCON.
