  • Hugo Broos has made history with the South African national football team
  • The Belgian coach guided Bafana Bafana into the AFCON 2023 semi-finals
  • Broos won the 2017 AFCON edition, coaching Cameroon's Indomitable Lions

When Hugo Broos assumed the role of Bafana Bafana head coach on May 5, 2021, he faced a challenging period, often clashing with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) hierarchy and teams.

Controversial comments and inconsistent team performances added to the tumultuous atmosphere under his tenure.

However, the South African Football Association (SAFA) stood by the Belgian coach, who won the AFCON 2017 edition with Cameroon.

Despite the initial challenges, Broos' experience proved crucial as he guided Bafana Bafana to Africa Cup of Nations qualification.

According to Far Post, Broos started with a monthly salary of approximately R750,000 (USD 50,000), surpassing the earnings of former coaches Stuart Baxter and Pitso Mosimane.

While the current salary remains undisclosed, Broos has demonstrated his value and repaid the trust placed in him.

Bafana's journey to the AFCON title gained momentum with a quarter-final triumph over Cape Verde. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams played a pivotal role in the penalty shootout, saving four shots and securing a 2-1 victory. This marked the team's first semi-final qualification in 24 years.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe's announcement of a 40% increase in prize money meant that Broos' men had already secured R47 million. The tournament winner in Cote d'Ivoire will receive USD 7,000,000 (R132 million), while the runner-up will get USD 4,000,000 (R75 million). The semi-finalists will receive USD 2,500,000 (R47 million).

“CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions. We have increased the Prize Money of the AFCON Winner to USD 7,000,000, which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money, "Motsepe said, as quoted by CAF Online.

Bafana Bafana's upcoming critical showdown against Nigeria in the semi-finals on Wednesday, February 7, in Bouake presents an opportunity to increase their prize money further and continue their remarkable resurgence.

They last met in the quarter-final of the 2019 AFCON, where South Africa succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, with William Troost-Ekong scoring the match-winner for the Super Eagles in the 89th minute.
