In a post shared on his Instagram page, the former Belgium international expressed his pride in his football journey, having represented some of the best clubs in his career, including Manchester United.

"What an incredible journey it's been," said Fellaini in a social media post.
"I am so grateful to have played the sport I love at the highest level," the towering midfielder continued.

Mourinho pays tribute to Fellaini

Just hours after Fellaini's announcement, Mourinho has paid his tribute to the Belgian, with the legendary manager reminiscing the player's contribution to his team during their time together at Old Trafford.

"I don’t forget who gave me everything he could give. You were and will always be one of mine. Congratulations on your career and rest those ankles that suffered a lot 😃❤️," the Special One wrote on Instagram.

According to BBC, Fellaini scored 22 goals for Man United in over 170 appearances for the Red Devils.

The 36-year-old, who previously played for Everton, helped United win the FA Cup in 2016 and the Europa League a year later.

His last assignment was in China with Shandong Taishan, where he spent four years after he departed Old Trafford.

Fellaini questioned Mourinho’s sacking

Sports Brief previously also reported on Fellaini questioning Man United's decision to sack Mourinho when the former Chelsea boss was relieved of his duties after losing 3-1 to Liverpool in December 2018.

The versatile midfielder claimed the club let go of one of the best managers in the world without allowing him the time to build his team. He also questioned the choice of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as his replacement.
