  • Mali legend Seydou Keita was in Bouake to watch against Ivory Coast
  • The Elephants defeated Mali with nine men to progress to the semis
  • Ivory Coast will face DR Congo on Wednesday for a place in the final

Former Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita was left in awe after Oumar Diakite scored late in extra-time as Mali suffered AFCON heartbreak in Bouake following defeat to nine-men Ivory Coast.

The Eagles played most of the game with a man advantage after Odilon Kossounou was red-carded in the first half for a foul on Mali forward Lamine Sinayoko.

Mali missed a first-half penalty but took a deserving lead with 20 minutes remaining through youngster Nene Dorgeles.

However, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations host responded in the 90th minute through Brighton winger Simon Adingra to force the game into extra-time.

With the game headed for penalties, Diakite, who came on in the final 30 minutes flicked a strike from Seko Fofana with virtually the final kick of the game as the Ivorian progressed to the semi-final.

In a video shared on social media, Keita could not believe as things unfolded in a dramatic finale at the Stade de Bouake. The Mali legend was seemingly disappointed by his country's collapse in the final minute.

Mali's dream of winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time fizzled away in a matter of seconds.

Ivory Coast will face DR Congo in the semi-final on Wednesday at the Stade Olympique Alassane Outarra, as reported by Sky Sports.

Dorgeles refuses to celebrate goal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Mali winger Nene Dorgeles decided to not celebrate his thunderous goal against Ivory Coast during the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final game against Ivory Coast.

The Red Bull Salzburg star announced his presence moments after replacing Adama Traoré after scoring from a long distance with 19 minutes left.

The host nation forced the game into extra time after Brighton winger Simon Adingra levelled in the final minute before Oumar Diakite stole the winner with the final kick of the game.
