  • Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has hit back at his critics
  • The 25-year-old has scored one goal in five games for Nigeria
  • Nigeria are through to the AFCON qualifiers after defeating Angola

Victor Osimhen is unbothered about his lack of goals at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after once again playing a crucial role in helping the Super Eagles qualify for the semi-finals.

Some fans have harshly scrutinised the 25-year-old forward after only scoring once in all of Nigeria’s five games at the competition as the team battles to win yet another continental trophy.

However, Osimhen, who admitted he would love to score more goals, has hit back, claiming he is pleased with Nigeria’s success and not bothered about his scoring form, Soccernet reports.

“Those who know me, they know I don’t put myself before the team. If my goal comes, they come. I want to help the team with goals, of course, but if I am not scoring, I am defending. If I am not defending, I am fighting for them.”

The Super Eagles have won every other match since playing a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea, beating hosts Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, and Angola to reach the semifinals.

Super Eagles want to win

Meanwhile, after defeating Angola in the quarter-finals, William Troost-Ekong has declared that the Super Eagles want to go all the way to win a fourth AFCON title in Ivory Coast, Score Nigeria reports.

Nigeria outplayed the Black Antelopes, with Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman scoring the crucial goal to send the three-time AFCON winners to their 16th-semifinal of the competition.

The Super Eagles will tackle either South Africa or Cape Verde for a place in the final after both teams settle their quarter-final clash later on Saturday.

Super Eagles get $30,000 each

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the Nigeria Football Federation has awarded $30,000 to each Super Eagles player for reaching the knockout stages of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The three-time AFCON winners won a place in the Round of 16 after finishing second in Group A with seven points, behind Equatorial Guinea but ahead of Guinea-Bissau and hosts Ivory Coast.
