But the further in competitions a club goes, the higher the revenue, and this also applies to league positions.
With this criterion in mind, Chelsea missed out heavily on prize money thanks to their lacklustre 2022/23 season.
The Blues finished in 12th place in the league, and this meant they missed out on a staggering £70m.
Liverpool’s failure to qualify for the Champions League last season also condemned them to missing out on £50m as they only managed to make it to the second-tier Europa League.
In contrast, Manchester City’s continued success last season meant more of their matches were being broadcasted, hence more revenue.
Pep Guardiola’s side earned an additional £4m for beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final, and the win over Inter in the Champions League final was worth a reported £95m, from £90m which they made just for reaching the penultimate stage of the competition.
Meanwhile, Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United, who all made a return to the Champions League, received a major financial boost as a result.
