  • Kaizer Chiefs eye Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi
  • Amakhosi's pursuit of Mngqithi aligns with his contract expiry
  • The club is expected to appoint a new coach on a long-term deal

Kaizer Chiefs are again expressing interest in securing the services of Mamelodi Sundowns' senior coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, as his contract ends this season.

Two Premier Soccer League (PSL) sides, Chiefs and AmaZulu, are vying for Mngqithi's signature.

He will be a free agent at the end of the season.

The coach has reportedly indicated a preference for Amakhosi, making it clear that he is not open to joining the Soweto giants at the end of the season.

"The Kaizer Chiefs job appeals to him more, but don’t be surprised if AmaZulu comes calling again if things don’t go according to plan with their current coach," a source to close to the coach said, as quoted on The Citizen.

This development aligns with Mngqithi's contract expiry after the season ends.

Interestingly, Amakhosi is expected to appoint a new coach on a long-term deal during the same period. Cavin Johnson will remain interim coach until the season's end.

Last season, the club was strongly linked with Mngqithi, ultimately opting for Molefi Ntseki.

Away from club matters, Mngqithi commended Bafana Bafana's head coach Hugo Broos for his faith in the team in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in the Ivory Coast.

Despite the recent victory over Africa’s highest-ranked team, Morocco, he believes there is more the team can deliver and urged the country to rally behind the national team.

“It’s not the time to be pessimistic. It’s time to trust and support our team, and our team has delivered, " he said on SABC1, as reported by Idiski Times.

Mngqithi also praised Broos for his loyalty to the players, stressing that Bafana still has more to offer in the ongoing tournament.

Neil Tovey concerned about Bafana facing Cape Verde in AFCON 2023 QF

Sports Brief reported South Africa’s 1996 Nations Cup-winning captain, Neil Tovey, worried about Bafana Bafana maintaining concentration levels against lesser sides.

The upcoming clash against Cape Verde is expected to be even more demanding.

Tovey warns that the Blue Sharks could present a more formidable challenge for Bafana Bafana.
