Neil Tovey, South Africa’s 1996 Nations Cup-winning captain, is worried about Bafana Bafana maintaining concentration levels against lesser reputation sides.
Hugo Broos side face Cape Verde in a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash in the Africa Cup of Nations 2023.

Despite their lower ranking, Tovey warns that the Blue Sharks could present a more formidable challenge for Bafana Bafana.
“The biggest challenge Bafana have now is getting around Cape Verde. In the other games it’s sort of been...how are Bafana going to do against strong teams? Whereas now everybody is saying, Ah well, Cape Verde, population 500,000 or whatever and expecting them to do well, but this is going to be a tougher game than against Morocco,” Tovey told TimesLive.
He stressed the need for Bafana Bafana to approach the Cape Verde game with the same attitude as they would against Nigeria, Morocco, or Egypt, expressing worries about the team's mentality.
While Morocco is Africa's top-ranked and the world's 13th-ranked team, Cape Verde is ranked 73rd globally and 14th in Africa.
They topped a tough Group B in Ivory Coast by beating Ghana (2-1) and Mozambique (3-0) and drawing against Egypt (2-2).
