  • Coach of the Palancas Negras, Pedro Goncalves has made fresh claims ahead of the massive fixture

The head coach of the Angolan national football team, Pedro Goncalves, has stated that his team have already identified the weaknesses of the Super Eagles.

Angola takes on Nigeria in a quarter-final match at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Despite their underdog status, the Palancas Negras are on a remarkable winning streak, having triumphed over Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and Namibia after a shaky start.

During a pre-match presser at the Palais du la Culture, Goncalves told journalists that his side is ready to face the three-time African champions.

He said:

"I know the national team of Nigeria. They might be more fragile than us. The most important thing is we are ready to face Nigeria. We are taking the situation one moment at a time.
"We've organised a lot of hybrid meetings, necessary to correct our weaknesses and areas where the team needs to improve.
"We've studied the opponent, and we have our own strategy, and this will help us have a win tomorrow."

The highly anticipated clash looks to be living up to expectations with what seems like mind games already taking place if the coach's words are carefully considered.

Peseiro downplays "favourites" tag

Sports Brief earlier reported that Jose Peseiro downplayed the “favourites” tag hung on the Super Eagles ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final tie against Angola.

After the Super Eagles made easy work of Cameroon in the last-16 stage, the three-time AFCON winners have been installed as favourites by fans and pundits to win the competition in Ivory Coast.

Peseiro reckons that the Super Eagles only have a 50% chance of winning and not the overwhelming favourites as widely speculated by fans and the media.
