  • Jose Mourinho has been linked with a return to Manchester United
  • The Portuguese veteran was sacked by the Red Devils back in 2018
  • He is currently without a role after Roma dismissed him in January

Manchester United fans all seem to be in agreement about Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese tactician was linked with a return to the club.

On Wednesday, January 31, rumours were rife that the 61-year-old tactician was eyeing a return to the club that sacked him back in 2018.

A report from SportBible claimed The Special One felt he had 'unfinished business' with Man United and would not mind taking over at the club for a second time.

Mourinho, who was sacked by AS Roma on January 16, is reportedly keen on working with new club owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, who took over operations.

Reports of the Portuguese manager possibly making a return to United after six years were met with interesting responses from Man United fans on social media.

Despite winning the Carabao Cup and Europa League with a depleted squad in his first season in charge of the club, Mourinho is not favoured by United fans, at least not in 2024.

If comments on X (formerly Twitter) are anything to go by, fans would rather stick it out with their current boss, Erik ten Hag, who is struggling to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Fans react to Mourinho to United rumours

@StretfordLaughs commented:

"Ten Hag will lead us to top 4 and FA Cup glory and shut everyone up."

@Paidhunk believes it would be a mistake:

"This PR will not work. Even Everton won't take him. Return his PR money to him. We don't want a controversial, washed-up Manager."

@qwertyboss33 does not back Mourinho:

"I don’t want this fraud near my club…he can go back to Chelsea"

@joshiisenough questioned the manager's intentions:

"What's unfinished business? Finishing the club ?"

@UtdNita was not impressed:

"We honestly don't need him. We envy his dramatic character but he has a negative effect on player management."

Mourinho’s third-season syndrome

Based on how his managerial career has gone in recent years, there is a feeling Mourinho has lost his spark as a football manager.

His last league title came in 2015, when he was in charge of Chelsea, in his second stint with the club.

Since then, he has managed United, Tottenham Hotspur, and AS Roma, winning trophies with all these clubs except for Spurs.

One consistent trend with teams managed by Mourinho is the so-called ‘third-season syndrome’ where his teams tend to fall off the radar after two relatively successful seasons.

At United, this proved to be the case as the former Porto boss was sacked in December 2018 with the club closer to relegation than the top of the table in terms of points, per the BBC.

He achieved mild success at Roma by winning a maiden Europa Conference League before taking the Giallorossi to the Europa League final the following season.

However, the Italian club's hierarchy eventually lost patience with Mourinho in his third season in charge of the club, with the club currently fifth in the Serie A standings.

How much Mourinho has earned from sackings

Elsewhere, Sports Brief previously reported on the surprising amount Mourinho has earned from sackings by various clubs.

Roma’s dismissal was the sixth sacking of his managerial career, three years after Spurs paid off his contract for £15 million.
