  • South Africa have reached the AFCON quarter-final
  • Bafana Bafana beat Morocco on Tuesday in the Round of 16
  • South Africa will pocket some money even if they fail to go past the quarters

South Africa are having a phenomenal AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

On Tuesday, January 30, they eliminated favourites and 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco in the Round of 16 to book their spot in the quarter-final.

After reaching the quarter-final, Bafana Bafana have already secured a fraction of CAF's prize money.

Hugo Broos's side will face Cape Verde in the quarter-final as they seek to win their first AFCON title since 1996. If they beat the Blue Sharks, Nigeria or Angola stand in their way.

It always hurts when a team can't win the title, but their efforts will be rewarded with money from the total prize pool.

CAF increased the prize money for this year's tournament by 40%. Every team that participated in the competition will receive some cash. Here's a complete breakdown.

  • Group stage: $500 000
  • Group stage (finished 3rd but failed to reach R16): $700 000
  • Round of 16: $800 000
  • Quarter-finals: $1.3mil
  • Semi-finalists (2 teams): $2.5mil
  • Runners-up: $4mil
  • Champions: $7mil

What South Africa have secured at AFCON

After reaching the quarter-final, Bafana Bafana have now secured a total of $1.3mil from CAF, R24.4 million in South African currency.

If they get to the final, they will pocket $7mil, which will be more than what the Springboks won (£5mil) during the Rugby World Cup last year.

After eliminating the favourites, Bafana Bafana will feel confident when they take on Cape Verde on February 3.

Hugo Broos's side have won two of their four matches so far in Ivory Coast, and they're still in celebration mode after the result against Morocco.

South Africa's road to the AFCON final

Sports Brief has also reported on South Africa's road to the AFCON 2023 final set to be played on February 11.

They will next face Cape Verde in the quarter-finals with a semis place at stake. If they prevail there, Bafana Bafana will face the winner of Nigeria versus Angola.
