Van Dijk clarifies statement
The Dutch national team captain began getting questioned by fans on social media over his commitment after making such a statement while they were still shocked by Klopp’s news.
In an interview with Men in Blazers, the former Southampton defender cleared the air, claiming his first comments were taken entirely out of context.
“Let’s make it clear. I am 100% committed to the club, I love the fans. It is fully taken out of context. It’s not about me, it’s about us. We weren’t even talking about my contract five days ago, so it’s a bit silly!” he said.
He was named captain ahead of the new season after the departures of James Milner and Jordan Henderson to Brighton and Al-Ettifaq, respectively.
He will be pivotal in helping the club transition into a new era. Per The Athletic, the club contacted former sporting director Michael Edwards, but he rejected the approach.
