  • Egypt won AFCON 2010 to become the only nation to win the title three times in succession
  • The Pharoahs' win in the final was their nineteenth straight AFCON match without defeat
  • They would only next be defeated seven years later in the final of AFCON 2017 in Gabon

Egypt completed one of the most memorable AFCON feats on this day in 2010.

January 31 of that year was the day of the AFCON final in Luanda between holders Egypt and a Ghana team containing Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan and a young Andre Ayew.

The Pharaohs were aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive AFCON title and were high on confidence having beaten Cameroon in the quarter-finals before thumping Algeria 4-0 in the semi-finals.

Egypt would prove too strong for Ghana, lifting the trophy thanks to an 85th-minute winner from Mohamed 'Gedo' Nagy.

After winning their third straight crown, Egypt then went on another curious hat-trick run that saw them fail to qualify for the next three AFCON tournaments.

However, they would return in 2017, going unbeaten until the final where they were defeated by Cameroon, ending their 24-match, 13-year undefeated run at Africa's premier football event.

The streak began in underwhelming fashion with a group stage draw against Cameroon that would see them knocked out of the 2004 AFCON.

Along the way, they would avoid defeat to Cameroon three more times before the Indomitable Lions finally got one over the North Africans.

Ivory Coast are the only other nation to feature twice in the streak, which also included wins against Morocco, Senegal and Nigeria.

In 2019, Egypt exited at the hands of South Africa in the Round of 16 and were again runners-up in 2021 when they lost to Sadio Mane and Senegal in the final.

Mohammed Salah will be 33 at the 2025 edition in Morocco, leaving him with only a handful of opportunities left to claim Africa's ultimate prize.

Calls for Egypt to sack Rui Vitoria

Sports Brief recently reported on Pharoahs legend Hassan Shehata wanting Rui Vitoria out.

Egypt will have to wait for their eighth AFCON title after they were eliminated by DR Congo.

Mo Salah was injured early in the competition and Egypt failed to win any of their matches.
