Egypt will have to wait a little bit longer for their record-extending eighth Africa Cup of Nations title after they were eliminated in the 2023 edition.
Legendary manager Hassan Shehata wants Pharaohs coach Rui Vitoria to be fired from his role following a poor tournament.
Egypt failed to win any game in Ivory Coast. They drew 2-2 against Mozambique, Ghana and Cape Verde in the group phase.
They drew 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Round of 16 before losing the tie on penalties. They lost captain Mohamed Salah in their second game.
Shehata coached Egypt to their historic AFCON titles in 2006, 2008, and 2010. He wants Vitoria out as coach of the national team.
“Vitoria should not continue with Egypt because he has not done anything, in terms of coaching, he has not developed the defenders. He must leave," via KingFut.
Shehata wants a coach who knows his players. He suggested Egypt icon, Hossam Hassan as a possible replacement.
“Vitoria’s replacement must be a national coach. Not because I want to take on the responsibility, but you must bring in a coach who knows his country’s players and knows how to deal with them."
Egypt have failed to win the tournament since Shehata led them to the 2010 crown in Angola. They reached the final of the 2021 edition but were beaten by Senegal, per BBC.

Gabaski's bottle antics fail
Sports Brief also reported that Egypt goalkeeper, Mohamed Abou 'Gabaski' Gabal was unable to replicate his penalty-saving heroics from AFCON 2021, missing a penalty in the shootout against DR Congo.
The National Bank of Egypt shot-stopper, renowned for his ability to save penalties, had previously played a crucial role in sending the seven-time champions to the final in Cameroon.
Despite appearing for the shootouts in Ivory Coast with his famous bottle, Gabaski couldn't make a single save in the post-match shootout, leading to Egypt's Round of 16 elimination.
