- Virgil van Dijk has cast doubt over his future after the departure of Jurgen Klopp
- The Dutch star has 18 months left on his current deal, leaving his options open
- He is not the only player whose future could be decided by the manager's exit
Jurgen Klopp's departure from Liverpool after nine years in charge will spark an unplanned restructuring at the club, which could influence the future of many players.
Klopp’s assistants and the club’s sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, will also leave at the end of the January transfer window as agreed in his contract when he joined last summer.
Sports Brief looks at five players whose futures could be decided by the departure of the German manager.
Players who could leave Liverpool after Klopp
1. Virgil van Dijk
Per The Times, the Dutch defender is the first player to speak on his future post-Klopp. He has 18 months left on his contract, and cast doubt over his stay at the club beyond this season. He joined the club in 2018 from Southampton for a world record fee of £75 million.
2. Mohamed Salah
Per The Guardian, the Reds rejected £150mil from Saudi club, Al-Ittihad last summer, but things could change with the departure of the manager who signed the Egyptian winger. By the end of the current season, he would have a year left on his contract, and the Merseyside club wouldn't be powerful enough to reject such an offer.
3. Thiago
The veteran Spanish midfielder was signed from Bayern Munich in 2020. He had struggled with injuries throughout his time at the club, and with his contract set to expire at the club, it makes sense for the club and incoming manager to let him depart the squad.
Jordan Henderson set to leave Al Ettifaq without receiving any of his £350,000 per week wage
Football4. Joel Matip
The Cameroonian defender has been one of Klopp’s loyal servants. He was signed from Schalke 04 in 2016 but will be out of contract in the summer. Considering his injury worries, not even the manager who signed him at the club would give him another contract.
5. Trent Alexander-Arnold
This should be Liverpool’s biggest concern after Klopp leaves. If the top stars depart, the academy graduate has what it takes to lead the club into a new era. He has a contract until 2025, and top European clubs could tempt him with a juicy offer.
Seven best players of Klopp era
Sports Brief also previously analysed the seven best players of Klopp's Liverpool era after the former Borussia Dortmund manager announced his decision to leave the club in June.
Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold are some of the best players of the German's era, while Jordan Henderson, Georgino Wijnaldum, and Divock Origi among the honourable mentions.
