  • Fabrice Ondoa started in goal for Cameroon against Nigeria on Saturday
  • The 28-year-old's mistake allowed Nigeria to take the lead
  • After the game, he spoke on whether he could replace Onana as Cameroon's28-year-old's Number One

Fabrice Ondoa had a coy answer when asked whether he could potentially replace Andre Onana as Cameroon's primary goalkeeper.

The Indomitable Lions were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, January 27, by Nigeria who claimed a 2-0 win at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.

A brace from Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman was enough to see off Cameroon, who will be ruing their first-half performance.

Ondoa, in particular, did not bask himself in glory, as he was arguably at fault for his team's first goal as Lookman's tame shot squirmed under him.

After the game, Onana was in no mood to answer media questions, but journalists caught up with the Manchester United goalie's cousin, who started in the Indomitable Lions' last two AFCON games.

Ondoa on whether he can replace Onana

In a video shared by Ugandan journalist @peaceBagala, Ondoa, who plays for Championnat National club Nîmes, was asked whether he had what it took to take over from Onana.

But the goalie was extremely careful with his response, potentially avoiding tensions between himself and his cousin.

“I think it’s the decision for the staff and the coaches,” he said.
“We are 27 players and I think everyone must be ready to play.”

Onana had an AFCON to forget

For Onana, he will be relishing his return to Manchester United.

After courting controversy by arriving late to his international team's camp, the shot-stopper was dropped for Cameroon's opening group game against Guinea, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

He finally got his chance against Senegal but failed to impress as the Lions of Teranga stormed to a 3-1 victory, with the Cameroon coach deciding to drop him for the final game against The Gambia.

Manchester United's next game is an FA Cup clash against Newport on Sunday, although it is unlikely Onana will be available for that match.

Nigeria's quarter-final opponent

In other news, Sports Brief reported on The Super Eagles' opponents for the quarter-finals after they triumphed over Cameroon.

Nigeria, who have won the AFCON three times, will face Angola in what promises to be a cracker.

The Palancas Negras secured their ticket to the last eight after making light work of Namibia with a 3-0 win on Saturday.
