  • The build-up to the AFCON clash between Nigeria and Cameroon continues
  • A host of players are buzzing about the potential of their team securing victory
  • A Super Eagles defender has spoken about Nigeria’s chances of winning the AFCON

The build-up to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tie between Nigeria and Cameroon continues to dominate the continent’s football scene.

Both teams, who share a rivalry that dates back to the 1960s, are poised to renew another instalment of the footballing thriller at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny.

However, in the lead-up to what is shaping up to be a nail-biting football encounter, a Nigeria defender has sent a defiant message ahead of the clash to the Indomitable Lions, further stressing the Super Eagles' ambition of winning the Cup of Nations.

Super Eagles defender on Nigeria winning the AFCON

In a recent interview with media outlet Brila.net, 24-year-old Boavista defender Bruno Onyemaechi emphasised the significance of the Super Eagles' upcoming clash against Cameroon and further stated the team’s overall ambition at the AFCON.

Onyemaechi stated, "Everyone is focused on winning. Whenever the coach speaks, he emphasises the desire to win the AFCON. I can confidently say that all the players are prepared to win.
We need to make sacrifices and give our best for the nation. Hopefully, in the next game, we will emerge victorious."

The fullback's words appear to resonate with other members of the national team, as many exude confidence in the Super Eagles' chances of succeeding at the AFCON.

However, while the defender's sentiments are reassuring, it must be acknowledged that the team first needs to overcome the immediate challenge of defeating the Cameroonian national team before shifting their focus to winning the AFCON title.

Gernot Rohr speaks on Cameroon’s clash

Sports Brief in another report stated former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has shared his insights on the upcoming AFCON clash between Nigeria and Cameroon.

The 70-year-old emphasised the physical and technical aspects of the encounter, suggesting that tactics might be disregarded in the heat of the battle.

The Franco-German, however, expressed his belief that a forward from the Super Eagles could be the decisive factor on the night.
