- Both nations will clash in a Round of 16 fixture at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations
Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has admitted that the match involving the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will be a tough one.
Musa, who is yet to make an appearance in this tournament, has warned against complacency when the three-time champions face their neighbours.
The encounter is billed for the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Saturday night, January 27, the same venue where Cameroon defeated Nigeria to win their first-ever AFCON title in 1984.
However, the Super Eagles will aim to repeat the feat they achieved in 2019 when they defeated their arch-rivals 3-2 in Alexandria, Egypt.
Musa, who played the entire duration of that thrilling encounter, said via Punch:
"That game was a tough duel and brought out the best in us, especially when we went 1-2 down despite scoring first.
“Of course, we know the match on Saturday will be even tougher.
“The Cameroonians will be determined not to lose again, but we will give our very best and go for a win. We can do it again. Our aspiration is to win the trophy and nothing has changed that.”
Nigeria and Cameroon have a rich history in competitive football matches, having faced each other 17 times.
Cameroon have managed four wins – three of these in the final matches of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984, 1988 and 2000.
