  • Segun Odegbami has backed the Super Eagles to defeat Cameroon
  • Nigeria will tackle the Indomitable Lions in the Round of 16 on Saturday
  • The Super Eagles are aiming to win the AFCON for a fourth time

Nigeria’s clash against Cameroon has been dubbed as a final before the actual final as both teams get ready to tackle each other in what is arguably the biggest fixture in the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 games.

Both teams have struggled so far in the competition in Ivory Coast, finishing as runners-up in their respective groups ahead of the crunch second-round fixture set to take place on Saturday, January 27.

According to Vanguard, Nigeria legend Segun Odegbami has backed the Super Eagles to win comfortably against Rigobert Song’s team, claiming the game will be Nigeria’s easiest so far at the AFCON.

‘’I can tell you without blinking that this game against Cameroon will be our easiest game. It is not going to be Cameroon’s usual brutal football. No. It’s going to be a free-flowing game on a typically good pitch. And that’s where our boys will catch them.”

The last time both teams met at the AFCON, the Super Eagles knocked out Cameroon after winning 3-2 in 2019, thanks to a brace from Odion Ighalo and Alex Iwobi netting the winning goal.

Super Eagles to rejig formation

Meanwhile, both Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman will return to the Super Eagles starting team against Cameroon for the crucial Round of 16 encounter on Saturday, January 27, Score Nigeria reports.

Both players were dropped to the bench for Nigeria’s last group game against Guinea-Bissau and replaced by Southampton’s Joe Aribo and AC Milan forward Samuel Chukwueze, respectively.

The Super Eagles are expected to deploy a 3-4-3 formation against the Indomitable Lions, with Lookman expected back on the wings and Iwobi in the midfield as they target a victory against their eternal rivals.

Osimhen targets winning AFCON title

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Victor Osimhen acknowledges that winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria is more important than any individual honours.

The 25-year-old forward, who has scored one goal in three games so far in the tournament in Ivory Coast, has been stroked by supporters for his performance in the competition.

The reigning African Footballer of the Year has come under fire for multiple wasted opportunities at AFCON.
