Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, insists that winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria ranks higher than any individual accolades after getting stroked for his performance in the competition.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year has come under heavy criticism following several missed opportunities at AFCON, as the Napoli forward has scored only one goal in three games.
According to the Punch, Osimhen says he is not under pressure to perform, and the most important thing is to win AFCON with Nigeria and not chase after individual honours.
“I think the most important thing is to do well with the team, to make sure the team does well as well as win the AFCON.
“For me, I don’t really care about my individual performance, I can be on the bench and the other players are getting the job done, so, the most important thing is to win and try to win the AFCON with this group. So, I’m ready to help the team.”
Osimhen is expected to lead Nigeria’s attack when the Super Eagles play against eternal rivals Cameroon in the Round of 16 game on Saturday, January 27.
CAF snubs Osimhen in Best XI
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles striker missed out on the official CAF Best Eleven for the first round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after the list was released by the football body, Score Nigeria reports.
The Nigeria forward missed out to Equatorial Guinea’s talisman Emilio Nsue, who has banged five goals already and is the leading goalscorer in the tournament, ahead of the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Peseiro frustrated with goal scoring problem
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Nigeria's troubles in front of goal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations remain a source of concern for Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro, who admits things must improve.
The three-time AFCON champions only scored three goals in the group stage, two from open play and one from the penalty spot against Ivory Coast.
