The Ghana Football Association (GFA) have taken the first step to replace Chris Hughton, who was fired after Ghana's disastrous performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars suffered a humiliating group stage exit for the second time in a row following a 2-2 draw with Mozambique in their last group match.

After their elimination was confirmed, Hughton and the entire technical bench was fired. The Ghana Football Association have now spoken for the first time since firing Hughton, per ESPN.

They have unveiled their plan for hiring a new coach to take over from Hughton. Led by President Kurt Okraku, GFA have unveiled a five-member committee to spearhead the search for the new coach.

They also named five essential qualities the coach must have to be considered for the position.

The coach must be a proven winner and a head coach from a national team or a club, a coach with a philosophy; he must have more than 15 years of experience, and he must have a proven track record in team reconstruction, organization and talent development.

The coach must also be a disciplinarian and possess leadership skills. A new coach will be to correct the failure in Ivory Coast.

Ex-Ghana coach Chris Hughton says goodbye

Sports Brief also previously reported on Hughton saying farewell to the Black Stars players and staff following his dismissal after a disappointing Nations Cup campaign.

He was spotted in the hotel chatting with Ghana staff and players as they exited, having failed to live up to the expectations of righting the wrongs of AFCON in 2021.

Ghana defender apologizes to fans

Sports Brief earlier reported on defender Alexander Djiku apologizing to Ghana fans following the Black Stars' elimination from AFCON.

Despite the early elimination, the Fenerbache centre-back was one of Ghana's best players at the tournament in Cote d'Ivoire.

"Words will certainly not be enough to erase the disillusionment. We are disappointed and very sorry for our Ghanaian people that we have failed at this stage of the competition," he said on X.
