  • Algeria wants Herve Renard to be their next coach
  • The Desert Foxes have parted ways with Djamel Belmadi
  • Belmadi’s exit came after they were knocked out of the AFCON

Algeria have parted company with coach Djamel Belmadi following their embarrassing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign after they were eliminated in the group stage.

Despite leading Algeria to the 2019 title, Belmadi has failed in subsequent tournaments, crashing out from the AFCON in 2021 and 2023 in the group stages without winning a game.

According to the BBC, Belmadi's exit came a day after the Desert Foxes' shock 1-0 loss to Mauritania, which meant the 2019 winners finished bottom of Group D.

Algeria has made contact with Herve Renard as they hope the current French women’s national team coach will be interested in replacing Belmadi, who was sacked after their AFCON campaign ended.

Renard is regarded as an icon in African football after winning the AFCON with Ivory Coast and Zambia and also had a stint with Morocco before moving to coach Saudi Arabia at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Renard responds to Algeria’s request

Meanwhile, Herve Renard has thanked Algeria for registering their interest in him but has declined the offer of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations winners owing to his current contract with France, French Football Weekly reports.

The former Zambia manager disclosed he is still under contract with the France women’s national team until August 2025 and, therefore, cannot accept another job at the moment.

Renard is currently preparing France for the 2024 Olympic Games set to be held in Paris but would be interested in taking over the Algerian job or any other offers available after the tournament.

AFCON coaches to be sacked

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that at least six coaches have lost their jobs at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, with the majority of the tacticians fired following a disappointing performance in the continental championship.

Tunisia's Jalel Kadri became the latest manager to resign after the North African football superpower was knocked out of the competition.

Kadri announced his resignation during his post-match interview after the Carthage Eagles drew 0-0 with South Africa.
