According to GOAL, Cameroon boss Rigobert Song benched Onana for his side's must-win clash against Gambia after he conceded three goals in their previous clash against defending champions Senegal.

The Manchester United goalie was replaced by his cousin Fabrice Ondoa in the Cameroon squad, and it is expected the France-based goalkeeper will be the team’s first-choice goalkeeper for the remainder of the competition.

Onana was seen in cheerful mode despite being dropped from the starting line-up and was chief motivator from the stands as the Indomitable Lions battled hard to secure a round of 16 ticket.

Nigerians beg for Andre Onana

Meanwhile, Nigerian fans have resorted to social media to urge the Cameroon coaching staff led by coach Rigobert Song to field Andre Onana when the Indomitable Lions face the Super Eagles on Saturday.

Popular Nigerian Photojournalist Pooja Sulaimon hailed Onana as the best goalkeeper in Cameroon and, therefore, must be allowed to be in goal against Nigeria.

Another fan, Mbah, also called for the Manchester United goalkeeper to feature in the round of 16 clash against Nigeria.

“Cameroon must play Onana against Nigeria if not we no go gree.”

Another Nigerian, Olu of Twits also posted:

“We don't mind them having 15 players, just let Onana be the goalie biko.”

Onana has been the subject of trolls and criticism since signing for Man United in the summer.

Onana spotted singing and dancing

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana sparked reaction from fans online after being seen on video leading his Cameroon teammates in a song and dance.

Onana is currently on international duty with the Indomitable Lions for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The troubled goalkeeper has made only one appearance for the national team, missing their Group C opening against Guinea.
