  • Jay Jay Okocha has stated that the AFCON 2023 has reached its business end
  • Okocha sent a message to the Super Eagles ahead of the clash with Cameroon
  • The former Nigerian star stated that the Indomitable Lions would be difficult

Legendary Jay Jay Okocha has admitted that the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 cracker between Nigeria and Cameroon will be a tough 'nut to crack'.

The Super Eagles are through to the knockout phase of the continental showpiece and will now face their familiar foes for a place in the last eight.

Nigeria finished second in Group A with seven points, behind Equatorial Guinea, who topped the standings with the same number of points but a better goal difference.

Cameroon had to come from behind in a highly-entertaining Group C fixture before their gasp 3-2 win over the Gambia to secure second-round qualification to eliminate Algeria.

Okocha, who netted a freekick in Nigeria's 2-1 win over Cameroon at the finals in 2004, stated that playing against the Indomitable Lions is always very difficult.

In a phone chat with Sports Brief, the former Paris Saint-Germain star said:

"It's for them to try and get the win to progress to the next stage no matter how. I want to say they should note that it is always difficult against Cameroon. "

The mercurial midfielder also cautioned the team never to lose focus, adding that the competition is now in the business end. He added:

"We all know that in the business end of the tournament. I just want to tell them to stay focused."

Okocha tips Ivory Coast to qualify

Sports Brief earlier reported that Okocha is optimistic Ivory Coast can still qualify for the Round of 16 in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations despite their loss to Nigeria.

Named as one of the favourites for the AFCON title, the Elephants were dealt a huge blow in front of their supporters after losing 1-0 to the Super Eagles, thereby putting their chance of qualification at risk.

Okocha has tipped the 2023 AFCON hosts to still go further in the competition despite being behind Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria in Group A with one game remaining.
