Mahmoud Trezeguet is feeling optimistic about Egypt’s chances of winning a record-extending eight Africa Cup of Nations title after they booked their spot in the Round of 16 on Monday, January 22.
The Pharaohs played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Cape Verde and were on the brink of elimination from the AFCON until Ghana collapsed in their game, conceding two late goals to cede the second spot in Group B.
According to KingFut, Trezeguet has promised the Egyptian fans that the team will fight until the very end to make sure they end up as champions of the 34th edition of the AFCON.
“We will fight until the end to claim the title. God willing, there is no worry about the Round of 16 encounter, and the true spirit of the Egyptian national team will be evident in the upcoming rounds.”
Egypt will now face the runners-up from Group F, which includes Morocco, DR Congo, Zambia, and Tanzania, with the final standings to be determined on Wednesday, January 24.
Hegazi insists Egypt must improve
Meanwhile, Egypt veteran defender Ahmed Hegazi has called on his teammates to improve after the Pharaohs sealed qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16, Ahram Online reports.
The 32-year-old disclosed that the seven-time AFCON champions had a difficult time during the group stages and have challenged the Pharaohs to finish strong despite their slow start to the competition.
Egypt are yet to win a single game so far at the AFCON, finishing Group B with three points following 2-2 draws in their three games against Mozambique, Ghana and Cape Verde.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy has been ruled out of the Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a knock in the final Group A game against Cape Verde.
The Al Ahly goalie was forced off late in the match, as the Pharaohs shared the spoils with the group leaders in a dramatic match in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
El Shenawy now joins Liverpool's talisman, Mohamed Salah, on the sidelines, having been ruled out for the remainder of the competition.
