- Morocco and DR Congo are being investigated by CAF
- A melee broke out between both teams after their draw
- Morocco and DR Congo are the top two teams in Group F
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have reportedly opened an investigation into the melee that occurred at the end of the Morocco versus DR Congo Africa Cup of Nations Group F clash.
Tensions rose between the Atlas Lions and the Leopards teams at the full-time whistle after their 1-1 draw on Sunday, January 21, as both sets of players and coaching staff clashed after the game.
According to France24, it started after the game when Morocco coach, Walid Regragui, approached Congo captain, Chancel Mbemba, who had previously received a yellow card for protesting with the referee.
Mbemba clearly took offence to what Regragui said to him and signalled for the video referee as players from both teams rushed in, with officials fighting to contain the scene as pushing and shoving occurred.
Before the bust-up on the pitch, Morocco wasted an opportunity to go to the knockout stage with one game remaining when DR Congo attacker, Silas Katompa Mvumpa, cancelled out Achraf Hakimi's early goal.
CAF launches investigation into fracas
Meanwhile, CAF have disclosed that they have started investigating the reason behind the clash between the Morocco and DR Congo players and technical crew after their Sunday bust-up, SNL24 reports.
The continent’s football governing body stated that they will take a further look at the events that occurred on the day and decide what sort of punishable actions it will take upon conclusion of its investigations.
It is expected that CAF would issue a fine to both countries, although Morocco manager, Regragui, has since apologised for his part in the fracas but denied claims that he made offensive remarks.
