FootballEgypt Suffer Another Injury Blow as Veteran Goalkeeper's AFCON Ends, Gabaski Takes Over
- Al Ahly's Mohamed El Shenawy has suffered an injury
- Egypt's goalkeeper is set to miss the rest of the AFCON
- Gabaski will replace El Shenawy in the knockout stages
Egypt's Africa Cup of Nations campaign has been rocked by injuries with goalkeeper, Mohamed El Shenawy suffering a knock in the final Group A game against Cape Verde.
The Al Ahly goalkeeper was forced off late in the game as the Pharaohs shared the spoils with the group leaders in a thrilling encounter in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
El Shenawy was replaced by Mohamed Abou 'Gabaski' Gabal in the final minute of injury time.
El Shenawy now joins the sideline supporters along with Liverpool talisman, Mohamed Salah, who has also been ruled out for the rest of the competition.
According to Kora Plus, the keeper suffered a dislocated shoulder and is not expected to recover on time for the rest of the tournament in Cote d'Ivoire.
The 35-year-old has been Egypt's safest pair of hands for over a decade and will now be replaced by the penalty-saving shot-stopper, Gabaski.
In Cameroon two years ago, El-Shenawy's AFCON was cut short after the group stages, leaving Abou Gabal to make his name at the competition.
The seven-time champions progressed to the knockout stage despite finishing with three points in their group, joining the Blue Sharks in the last 16.
Egypt will now await confirmation of their opponents for the Round of 16 after the final round of group-stage games on Thursday, per Sky Sports.
The Pharaohs last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2010 and with the injuries in camp, the chances of winning again are slim for the North Africans.
Salah to miss the rest of AFCON
Sports Brief also previously reported that Liverpool forward, Salah will miss the rest of AFCON in Cote d'Ivoire after picking up an injury in the match against Ghana.
He limped off in the 2-2 against the Black Stars with a hamstring injury deemed worse than expected, having initially been ruled out for just two games for his nation.
