  • Mohamed Salah is likely to miss the remainder of the AFCON through injury
  • The Liverpool ace sustained a hamstring injury while in action against Ghana
  • Salah has since resolved to return to Liverpool to embark on his recovery

Egypt football legend Ahmed Hassan has called out Mohamed Salah for returning to Liverpool following his injury.

Salah picked up a muscle injury while on Egypt duty at the Africa Cup of Nations against Ghana.

The Liverpool star had featured in his country's group stage opener against Mozambique, scoring from the spot to earn his side a vital point.

It was initially reported that Salah would miss at least two matches after his injury, and would be fit in time for the quarter-finals if The Pharaohs get that far.

However, the striker's agent has since taken to X per BBC to disclose that the injury is more serious than initially thought, and the Egyptian could be out for between three to four weeks.

That development has seen the former Roma star return to Liverpool to embark on his recovery.

However, his decision to leave the AFCON camp has been criticised by Egypt icon Hassan.

According to the former striker, given Salah's influential role in the squad, he should have stayed with the team rather than jet back to the UK.

"I’ve always backed Salah and I was very happy with his presence as captain of the Egyptian national team. I had no problems with what he said, but it turned out that he was plotting his departure from the Egypt camp," Hassan told The Mirror via SPORTbible.
"Do the AFCON regulations allow a player to leave the national team’s camp and come back again? He had the possibility of bringing in someone from Liverpool’s medical staff to be with him during the competition. Again, he is the captain. He should stay with the team no matter what, even if he only had one leg to stand on," he added.

Egypt are already through to the round of 16 of the continental showpiece despite drawing 2-2 with Cape Verde in their final group fixture.

Salah did not feature in the Monday night tie, with Trezeguet and Mostafa Mohamed scoring for the north African country.
