- Cameras captured the Egyptian star's reaction to one of the Pharaohs' goals
Mohamed Salah experienced a full spectrum of football emotions as he watched his Egypt team from the bench in the entertaining AFCON group game against Cape Verde.
Despite being underdogs in a group that had two heavyweights, Cape Verde defied the odds and went into the final game with two wins from their opening two games.
This made them favourites to advance to the last 16, while Egypt and Ghana had to record positive results and hope the other slipped in their final group game.
The Pharaohs went behind through Benchimol’s smart finish in the first half but equalised after the break through Trezeguet’s volley in the 50th minute.
Egypt knew a win would keep their hopes of reaching the last 16 in their hands and thought they had taken all three points when Mostafa Mohamed lobbed Vozinha in second-half stoppage time.
The goal subjected the entire stadium to a tense moment as match official, Alhadi Mahamat had to review the build-up from a pitch-side monitor over a possible handball.
Salah celebrates Egypt's goal
Once the goal was confirmed to have stood, the Egypt players broke into celebration as cameras panned to their bench to show their missing talisman’s reaction.
As seen in a video published by @LiamMLFC on X, Salah briefly turned into a fanboy as he celebrated with euphoria, knowing what the win would mean for his nation.
There was more drama to come, however, as the Blue Sharks pushed on and fine build-up play allowed Bryan Teixeira to smash home an equaliser with practically the last attack of the game, per the BBC.
