AFCON 2023: Nigeria’s Victor Boniface Pokes Fun at Ghana After Collapse vs Mozambique

Ghana were headed to a comfortable 2-0 win over Mozambique in their final Group B game on Monday evening at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. However, things quickly unravelled when Mozambique scored two quick goals to stun the Black Stars.

With their arch-rival Nigeria sealing qualification, they had some time to roast Ghana on social media, and Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface joined in.

Two well-taken penalties gave Ghana a comfortable 2-0 lead in the 70th minute. However, Ghana's performance was less impressive compared to Mozambique, who looked like scoring every time they went forward.

As the clock ticked towards the 90-minute mark, the Black Stars were on the way to securing all three points. However, the gods of the 2023 AFCON had other plans.

First, they conceded a penalty from Geny Catamo, and many felt they could still seal the three points. But the script was still being written. Ghana's goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, inexplicably touched a ball that was going out for a goal kick, resulting in a corner for Mozambique at the death.

Of course, Mozambique scored from the corner through Reinildo Mandava to equalize, breaking the hearts of millions of Ghanaians. They would've qualified with a win and are now on the brink of a second straight group stage exit.

Victor Boniface trolls Ghana

Nigeria comfortably sealed qualification earlier in the day with a 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau, so it looks like they had been plotting their bitter rivals.

When the referee blew the final whistle, Super Eagles fans got to work. They unleashed every meme in their arsenal while Ghana fans were still coming to terms with the result.

Bayer Leverkusen and Nigeria striker, Victor Boniface, was not left behind. He posted a photo of a woman carrying bags to imply Ghana should pack their bags and go home after the humiliation. He has since deleted the post on X.

If or when Ghana's elimination from the 2023 AFCON is confirmed, Nigerian fans undoubtedly have something special planned for that day.

AFCON 2023 teams in last 16

Sports Brief earlier reported on teams that have already booked their place in the AFCON Round of 16.

Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea have qualified for the last 16. The latter finished their group campaign with a 4-0 drubbing of hosts, Ivory Coast.

Egypt, Senegal, and Cape Verde have also qualified. Other teams will be confirmed in the next few days.
