The Super Eagles of Nigeria are through to the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Guinea-Bissau at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny on Monday evening.

The three-time African champions sealed second place in Group A after their 1-0 win over the Djurtus.

Guinea-Bissau started brightly and got the first shot on target of the game, as Nito attempted a strike from over 25 yards, but Stanley Nwabili saved his efforts.

Despite the Djurtus creating the better chances, it was the Super Eagles that took the lead after a beautiful cross from Moses Simon was turned in by Opa Sangante in the 36th minute.

The first half ended with Guinea-Bissau being the better side, but the Super Eagles started the second 45 minutes on a good and had a lot of chances but failed to make positive use of them.

Victor Osimhen thought he had given the Eagles a two-goal lead on the hour mark, but his goal was ruled out for handball by the centre referee, with the VAR also confirming it.

There was a little scare for the Eagles as the Wild Dogs thought they had levelled things up in the 81st minute through Franculino, but his goal was ruled out as offside.

Second-half substitute Zaidu Sanusi also had the ball in the net in the 84th minute, but it was also ruled out as offside.

Sports Brief also reported on Stanley Nwabili defending teammate Victor Osimhen after facing criticism due to his performance at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Chippa United goalkeeper's comments about the Napoli striker are an attempt to boost his confidence and regain his form in front of goal.

The former Lille striker has only scored one goal in the competition thus far.
