One such player drawing attention is current Confederation of African Football (CAF) Player of the Year and star for Napoli Victor Osimhen. Despite an impressive record of 31 goals in 39 appearances for his club in 2023, as reported by Whoscored, Osimhen has faced challenges in making a notable impact in the tournament.

The 25-year-old forward has managed to score a goal and earned a penalty for his country. However, Osimhen tops a concerning statistic, having missed three big chances at the AFCON.

This statistic underscores the numerous clear-cut opportunities presented to him by his teammates in the opening two fixtures.

Osimhen's struggles in front of goal have triggered criticism from fans and stakeholders, labelling him an underperformer for his nation.

Nonetheless, as the Super Eagles gear up for their final group clash against Guinea Bissau, goalkeeper for the team, Stanley Nwabali has voiced his support for the 25-year-old forward.

Nwabali backs Osimhen

In an interview with media outlet Idiski Times, the Chippa United goalkeeper expressed his support for Osimhen in the face of criticism.

"I mean, come on, the striker scored a goal. He brought us back against Equatorial Guinea, and we could have won the game.
The best striker in Africa, one of the best in the world, scored in one game and lifted the team. And how many goals has Sadio Mane scored? He hasn't scored. [Mane has since scored one goal.]
How many goals has Salah scored? He scored a penalty. How many good strikers in this competition have been able to score a goal?"
"I understand Osimhen because he is the best now, but come on, he has scored a goal, and I wouldn't judge him because we can't blame one person. To me, Osimhen is Africa's best because you can see this guy is really hungry."

The remarks from the 27-year-old goalkeeper are an attempt to boost confidence in the Nigerian superstar. Nevertheless, Osimhen will be hoping to rediscover his scoring form soon as the competition progresses into its crucial stages.

Osimhen desires Premier League transfer

In another report, Sports Brief highlighted the desire of Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen to secure a transfer to the Premier League.

The 25-year-old is reportedly on the radar of many Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea.

Osimhen recently made history with his current club, Napoli, when he helped them win their first scudetto in 33 years.
