  • The final group-stage fixtures of the Africa Cup of Nations are coming
  • The Super Eagles of Nigeria are poised to face the lowly Guinea Bissau
  • A former AFCON winner has given encouragement to the Nigerian squad

The final round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group-stage matches continues, with the Super Eagles of Nigeria slated to face the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau on January 22.

The stakes are high in this encounter as the three-time Cup of Nations champions aim to secure the top spot in their group, ahead of host nation, Ivory Coast, and Equatorial Guinea.

The upcoming clash against their West African counterparts promises to be a pulsating encounter, particularly in light of Baciro Cande’s team's victory over the Super Eagles just 11 months ago in Abuja.

Nonetheless, in anticipation of this crucial face-off, a former Nigeria forward and former AFCON winner has rallied his motivation for the players, instilling confidence for the impending showdown.

AFCON winner encourages Nigeria

Former Super Eagles winger and 1980 Cup of Nations winner, Segun Odegbami, who visited the team’s training camp in Ivory Coast, offered encouragement to the team.

According to a report by Complete Sports, the 71-year-old expressed his support ahead of what promises to be a tough encounter.

"It’s going to be challenging because that’s our tradition. When we win a match and start to think the next one will be easy, that’s when it becomes difficult.
"So, I don’t expect an easy match but calmly do the things you know how to do best. Under any circumstances, you will win, and we will be with you till the end."

The retired football legend concluded with optimism:

"I believe it; you are winning it, and I want you to believe it too because I know you can play well. I wish you the best of luck, and I’m here because we will take that cup together."

Following a notable victory against Ivory Coast, the Super Eagles are aiming for a repeat of their 2021 AFCON performance against the Djurtus as they face off at the Stade Alassane Outtara.

Peseiro discusses goal for Guinea Bissau clash

Sports Brief also previously reported that Nigeria national coach, Jose Peseiro has outlined the Super Eagles' goal for the upcoming match against Guinea Bissau.

The 63-year-old emphasised that his team is focused on securing a victory against Baciro Cande’s side, with a win set to give them a favourable Round of 16 draw.
