Six football fans in Guinea have been confirmed dead following wild celebrations after the country's victory over the Gambia at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Aguibou Camara's second-half strike was enough as the Syli National secured their first win at the competition in Cote d'Ivoire.

However, after the match, fans reportedly took to the streets of Conakry to celebrate on motorbikes and in cars, leading to the death of six supporters.

Three people were said to have died when two vehicles collided, with several suffering various degrees of injuries. Another three were later reported dead in another incident.

"What is important is that our fans and the public celebrate in a very measured fashion," Guinea's Football Federation media manager, Amadou Makadji told BBC Sport Africa while confirming the unfortunate incident.
"They have to be very careful to not put themselves in danger because the goal of football is to bring joy and not leave families bereaved. We do not want deaths to mourn, so we call on everyone to celebrate but to take care of themselves so that nothing happens to them."

The coach and players of the Guinea national team have since paid tribute to the fans who died in an emotional video shared on social media.

Guinea, who were runners-up at AFCON in 1976, have started the competition on a good note, drawing their first match against Cameroon before beating the Gambia.

They will face reigning champions, Senegal on Tuesday for a place in the last 16.

Guinea secure first win at AFCON 2023

Sports Brief earlier reported that midfielder, Camara's second-half goal gave Guinea the win over the Gambia at AFCON on Friday, leaving them on the brink of securing a place in the last 16.

The Atromitos and Syli National midfielder swept home from an assist by Morgan Guilavogui midway through the second half to decide the Group C contest in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.

Guinea had been the more dangerous of the two sides despite again being without star striker, Serhou Guirassy, just as they were for their opening 1-1 draw of the competition against Cameroon.
