Morocco coach, Walid Regrugui has broken his silence following the heated exchange between himself and DR Congo captain, Chancel Mbemba.

The Atlas Lions gaffer was spotted exchanging words with the Olympique Marseille centre-back, leading to chaos as players from both sides clashed.

After the match, Regragui reportedly approached Mbemba to offer congratulations after the draw but things quickly escalated between the two.

According to the Morocco coach, he regretted the ugly scenes that marred the AFCON 2023 Group F clash, claiming he had the utmost respect for Mbemba.

"I have nothing to say about that. Maybe it was the adrenaline that made him respond like that. There's no problem. I regret [it] because neither we nor the DRC were given a good image," he said in a post-match presser.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly launched an investigation into the unfortunate incident after the group-stage game on Sunday.

The Atlas Lions had taken an early lead through Paris Saint-Germain defender, Achraf Hakimi but the Leopards levelled through Katompa Mvumpa with 14 minutes remaining.

Morocco will next face Zambia while DR Congo plays Tanzania, as reported by the BBC.

Mbemba breaks silence after Morocco clash

Sports Brief previously reported on Mbemba explaining what sparked the exchange between himself and Morocco head coach, Regragui.

The Olympique Marseille centre-back furiously reacted at the end of the Group F clash, with players on both sides eventually clashing.

It is unclear what Regragui said to spark that reaction, but according to the former Newcastle United player, the words were 'unprintable'.

Morocco and DR Congo clash after draw

Sports Brief also previously reported on the chaotic closing of the game between Morocco and DR Congo in San Pedro, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Mbemba, captain of the Leopards, left the pitch after a knock in the dying moments of the match but could not return as the referee kept the play going.

The Olympique Marseille centre-back was left fuming on the sideline up until the final whistle as the Leopards held on to seal a draw with the Atlas Lions.
