Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Mohamed Salah will return to Liverpool to nurse the injury he picked up at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Salah was taken off in the first half of Egypt's clash against Ghana with a muscle injury as the Pharaohs battled to hold the West Africans to a two-all draw.

The Egyptian FA confirmed the forward had suffered a strain in the posterior muscle and would miss the next two games for his country.

The record African champions are yet to qualify for the round of 16. They play Cape Verde on January 21, requiring nothing short of a win to proceed to the knockout stage.

Salah will only be available to play should they reach the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Lewis Steele reports that Klopp stated the 31-year-old would be allowed to return to Ivory Coast should Egypt reach the latter stages of the tournament.

Egypt's AFCON 2023

The North African giants began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Mozambique. They needed a late Salah penalty to rescue a point against the resilient Black Mambas before digging deep again against Ghana.

With Cape Verde already on six points and through to the next round, one other automatic spot remains for either Egypt, Ghana, or Mozambique.

The Pharaohs are second with two points, while the other two, who face each other in the third round of the group stages, are on a point apiece.

Cape Verde's warning to Egypt

Cape Verde have already issued a strong warning to Egypt ahead of their clash at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny on January 22 in a crucial match for the record AFCON champions.

Sports Brief had earlier reported that forward, Garry Rodrigues has insisted his side would be going for maximum points despite already qualifying for the Round of 16.

The Island nation stunned Ghana in their first game of the AFCON in Ivory Coast before breezing past Mozambique in their second game to seal their place in the knockout round.
