Real Madrid beat Almeria in La Liga in a VAR-dominated game, but were they lucky to have decisions go their way?

Coach, Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t seem to think his side were favoured in any way and has supported the referee’s decisions.

As noted by Football Espana, Ancelotti believed that referee, Francisco Jose Hernandez Maeso made the correct calls.

"I’ve seen them. I think the referee made the right decision, not VAR. VAR warned him, and he decided. And I think he was right," he said.

Madrid were down 2-0 at half-time but won the game 3-2 after the VAR played a huge factor in the second half of the La Liga game.

Ancelotti came out in defence of the referee after some of Almeria’s players and their coach were critical of some of the decisions. Opposition manager, Gaizka Garitano was even shown a red card after voicing his opinion on some of the calls.

After the game, defender Marc Pubill said it felt as if they weren’t allowed to win the match.

Why Almeria were upset

While Madrid’s resurgence in the second half was impressive, it was not without some help from the VAR and the referee.

Almeria’s Kaiky was first penalised for a handball in the box, despite some questions over whether he was fouled during the incident. Jude Bellingham stepped up and converted the penalty.

Sergio Arribas then scored for the lowly Almeria side, but his goal was ruled out after the VAR spotted a soft foul in the buildup.

Madrid then scored the equaliser as Vinicius Junior appeared to have scored with his hand.

Despite the numerous calls in their favour, which helped secure them the win, Ancelotti still maintained that the decisions were correct.

Vinicius Junior appears to score with hand

Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior saw his goal overruled and then later given despite it appearing to have come off his hand.

The Brazilian attacker scored the goal against Almeria in La Liga, as Los Blancos came from behind to claim a 3-2 victory.

Vinicius' handball goal was just one of the many talking points in the VAR-dominated game, Sports Brief has also reported.
