The official X account of Ligue 1, previously known as Twitter, appears to have responded to Cristiano Ronaldo's remarks asserting that the Saudi Pro League (SPL) surpasses Ligue 1.
Ronaldo, honoured with the Best Goalscorer, Fans' Favourite Player of the Year, and Best Middle East Player awards at the 2023 Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on Friday (January 19), was questioned about his views on the SPL's quality during the award ceremony.
The ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid icon said while on stage as reported by Sportbible.
"To be honest I think the Saudi League is not worse than French league, in my opinion. In [the] French league I think you have two, three teams with a good level. In Saudi now I think it's more competitive.
Following Ronaldo's remarks, the official X account of Ligue 1 shared an image depicting PSG sensation Kylian Mbappe holding Ronaldo's face.
The photograph appears to capture a moment from a friendly match between PSG and Al-Nassr in January 2023, which saw the French team emerge victorious with a 5-4 scoreline.
Lionel Messi, Ronaldo's long-time on-field rival, spent two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain in France before departing for Inter Miami in 2023. Meanwhile, 'CR7' has plied his trade in Portugal, England, Italy, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia throughout his career.
With the exception of two seasons, PSG has claimed every league title in France since the 2011-12 campaign. AS Monaco (2016-17) and LOSC Lille Metropole (2020-21) emerged as the other two victors during that period.
