  • Victor Osimhen won the 2020 Marc Vivien Foe Award as a Lille player
  • COVID restrictions prevented him from receiving the award
  • He was presented with the gong in Abidjan four years later

Victor Osimhen was named the 2020 Marc Vivien Foe Award winner for the best African footballer in the French Ligue 1 but had just received his award in Abidjan.

Osimhen spent a season with LOSC Lille after joining from Royal Charleroi before securing a big-money move to Italian club SS Napoli a year later.

He played 27 league games for the French club, scoring 13 goals before the season was truncated due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which ravaged throughout the world.

For his exploits, he was named the 2020 Marc Vivien Foe Award winner, succeeding former Lille winger Nicolas Pepe, who joined Arsenal for £72 million.

Osimhen receives award after four years

The Super Eagles striker was announced the winner of the award, but a ceremony could not be held due to strict safety restrictions following the return of football.

He moved to Napoli that summer, and nothing has been said about the award again until today when he received his medal in Abidjan during the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Nigerian has become a bigger star in Naples, helping the club win its first Italian Serie A title since the 1989/90 season, the last of which was won by Diego Maradona.

He is also the African with the most goals in Serie A with 57 league goals, surpassing 1995 Ballon d'Or winner George Weah.

The award was named after former Cameroonian footballer Foe, who died on the pitch while playing for Premier League club Manchester City in 2003.

He spent most of his career in the French Ligue, winning two titles, one each with Olympique Lyon and RC Lens.
