  • Andre Onana has left a lot to be desired with another controversial effort this season
  • The Manchester United goalkeeper made his first start at AFCON 2023 on January 19
  • He ran into Senegal's half to give free kick advice to his teammate in the second half

Andre Onana amused fans after he ran the full length of the pitch to offer free kick advice to a teammate during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations on Ivory Coast.

Onana made his first start at the 2023 edition after Rigobert Song included him in Cameroon's squad to play Senegal at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yammoussoukro on January 19.

The goalkeeper missed their first game, a one-all draw against Guinea, after he arrived late from England following his decision to stick around for Manchester United's Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur on January 14.

He failed to inspire a first win for the five-time African champions against the Lions of Teranga, with Senegal running out with a comfortable 3-1 win. Ismailla Sarr opened the scoring in the 16th minute before setting up Habib Diallo in the 71st minute.

Al-Nassr star, Sadio Mane rounded off the scoring in stoppage time to vanquish hopes of a Cameroon comeback after Jean-Charles Castelletto had pulled one back seven minutes from time.

Onana's antics during free kick

At one point in the game, Onana raced deep into Senegal's half after Cameroon were awarded a free kick.

The Red Devils' custodian was spotted speaking to the designated kick-taker, Georges Nkoudou, before going back to his goal. Nkoudou ended up wasting his effort as it trickled out for a goal kick.

The 2023 Champions League finalist was also faulted for Mane's goal. The Liverpool legend connected with Idrissa Gana Gueye's cutback, but his effort lacked any real power behind it.

However, the ball rolled into Onana's bottom corner with his last-ditch save a little bit too late.

The Indomitable Lions scraped their way into the AFCON Round of 16 with a 3-2 win over the Gambia to finish second in Group C, setting up a clash with Nigeria on January 27.

Ghana set unwanted AFCON record

Sports Brief has also previously reported that Ghana set an unwanted record following their 2-2 draw with Mohamed Salah's Egypt.

The result means the four-time AFCON champions have now gone six games without a win in the AFCON, the longest in their history.
