FootballAFCON 2023: Ghana Set Unwanted Record After 2:2 Draw Against Egypt
- Ghana are on their longest winless run in their AFCON history
- The Black Stars failed to beat Egypt in their Group B encounter
- Chris Hughton’s men have one point from their first two games
Ghana have had an underwhelming start to their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign as the Black Stars risk an early elimination from the competition after garnering just one point from two games.
After suffering a surprise 2-1 loss against Cape Verde in their first game, Chris Hughton’s men could only manage a 2-2 draw against the Pharaohs of Egypt on Thursday, January 18.
Mohammed Kudus’ brace could not salvage a much-needed win for the Black Stars as Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohamed twice equalised for the seven-time AFCON winners.
The result against Egypt means Ghana have now gone six games without a win in the AFCON, the longest the four-time African champions have gone without victory in the competition.
The Black Stars will next face Mozambique in their final game of the group stage, and Chris Hughton’s men are condemned to win or be knocked out of the AFCON.
Mohammed Kudus is Ghana’s star
Meanwhile, Egypt and Ghana drew 2-2 in their second Africa Cup of Nations encounter on Thursday, but West Ham United winger, Kudus was the standout performer, GOAL reports.
In a game that had Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah representing the Pharaohs, the 23-year-old, who had only just recovered from an injury, grabbed the headlines after netting a brace for the Black Stars.
Ghana will hope Kudus maintains this goal-scoring form as they head into their final group-stage game against Mozambique in a must-win game for Chris Hughton’s men.
