FootballAFCON 2023: Nigerian Fans Cause Internet Meltdown After Super Eagles Upset AFCON Hosts Ivory Coast
- Nigeria beat 2023 AFCON hosts Ivory Coast at the Stade Alassane Ouattara
- A strike from William Troost-Ekong gave the Super Eagles all three points
- The win firmly puts Nigeria in pole position to book a spot in the next round
Nigerian fans were on cloud nine after the Super Eagles beat 2023 Africa Cup of Nations hosts, Ivory Coast in a cagey heavyweight clash in round two.
Captain, William Troost-Ekong's second-half strike from the spot ensured the three-time African champions recovered from their opening-day setback.
The former Watford defender's solitary strike in the 55th minute was more than enough to upset the hosts, who were poised to add Nigeria to their victim list after beating Guinea-Bissau in their opening game.
Despite the deafening noise at the Stade Alassane Ouattara clearly backing the AFCON hosts, the Super Eagles managed to brave the odds to put up a valiant performance to grab all three points at stake.
After the blast of the referee's whistle for full-time, the playing body and the Nigerian technical bench were thrown into a state of frenzy.
They were not the only ones who enjoyed the almost impossible mission, as fans trooped to X (formerly Twitter) to bask in national glory.
