  • Egypt and Ghana desperately need a win in their second AFCON game
  • The Pharaohs are slight favourites for the clash based on recent history
  • Ghana’s last win over Egypt was a 6-1 thrashing nearly a decade ago

Two of Africa’s heavyweights clash in the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday, January 18, with both sides desperately needing a positive result.

Egypt, the most successful nation in AFCON history, takes on a Ghana side who are wounded after a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde.

The Pharaohs, who last won the competition in 2010, also had a disappointing outing in their opening game, only managing a 2-2 draw against underdogs Mozambique.

Ghana vs Egypt’s last meetings

Based on recent history, Egypt have a slight edge over the Black Stars of Ghana.

As cited on Opta, the Pharaohs and Black Stars have met five times in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Three of those meetings have occurred in the Group stage where each team triumphed over the other once, and the other match ended in a draw.

The last time the two nations met was in 2017 during a qualifier for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Egypt beat the Black Stars 1-0 at home before forcing them to a 1-1 draw in the other fixture in Accra.

What happened the last time Ghana beat Egypt?

You will have to go all the way back to 2013 for the last time Ghana triumphed over Egypt.

As reported by Ghanafa.org, the Black Stars, led by their all-time goal scorer Asamoah Gyan, were simply unplayable in the World Cup qualifier game as they beat the Pharaohs 6-1.

Gyan opened the scoring before an own goal by Wael Goma suggested it would be a long evening for Egypt.

The Pharaohs pulled one back through Mohamed Aboutrika, but Ghana pulled further away courtesy of goals by Majeed Waris, Asamoah Gyan’s second and Sulley Muntari’s penalty.

Ghana vs Egypt team news

Ahead of the cracker, Egypt are not missing any key players.

But the Black Stars are still sweating over the fitness of Mohammed Kudus, who missed the opener against Cape Verde through an injury he sustained while playing for West Ham.

Kudus reportedly returned to first-team training on Monday and is expected to at least feature in the matchday squad on Thursday, per Standard.co.uk.

Ghana are also without Thomas Partey, whose injury issues persist.

Ivory Coast vs Nigeria

Another game to watch out for on Thursday is Ivory Coast against Nigeria.

Jose Peseiro’s side are on the hunt for their first victory in this year’s competition, while Ivory Coast got off to a perfect start with a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau.

As Sports Brief reported, the Super Eagles are likely to go with a similar squad to the one that drew against Equatorial Guinea, with Victor Osimhen expected to lead the line.
