Jose Mourinho bid an emotional farewell to Roma fans at the club's training ground, appearing teary-eyed after being sacked as the Serie A side's head coach.
Despite guiding the Giallorossi to Europa Conference League glory in 2022, Mourinho couldn't replicate that success in securing Champions League qualification during his two full seasons.
Expected to leave at the end of the season, recent setbacks, including a Coppa Italia defeat and a loss to AC Milan, led to his premature departure, with Roma sitting in ninth place in Serie A.
Although Mourinho was celebrated for delivering the club's first trophy in 14 years, his popularity waned in recent weeks, especially after the defeat to arch-rivals Lazio, per Football Italia.
The 61-year-old received a hero's exit from Roma's Trigoria training ground, acknowledging fans as they serenaded him for his efforts in the Italian capital.
Expressing gratitude through an open window, Mourinho fought back tears while bidding farewell and concluded with a 'ciao,' prompting fans to chant his name as he left.
The future for Mourinho remains uncertain, and he is expected to take a break from football before assessing his options for the next season.
Roma names new coach
In the meantime, Roma swiftly announced the appointment of former captain Daniele De Rossi as the new head coach, per the Mirror.
The 40-year-old will lead the team until the end of the season, making his managerial debut in the upcoming clash against Verona this weekend.
