FootballAFCON 2023: Algeria Striker Baghdad Bounedjah Scores Outrageous Overhead Kick, but Goal Is Ruled Out
- Algeria’s Baghdad Bounedjah scored a stunner against Angola, but it didn’t count
- The Fennec Foxes were held to a 1-1 draw in their AFCON opener
- Bounedjah thought he had put his side 2-0 up, but his goal was chopped off
One of the best goals to be disallowed in the Africa Cup of Nations was witnessed on Monday, January 15.
Algeria striker Baghdad Bounedjah thought he had put his side 2-0 up with an outrageous overhead kick, but his strike was painfully ruled out for offside.
Earlier on, the 32-year-old had given his side the lead with an equally brilliant goal as he latched onto a long pass with a first-time finish.
But his moment of the game came in the 25th minute when he received an aerial ball which he expertly controlled with his chest before adjusting his body to produce a fierce overhead kick which found the net.
The striker, who plays for Qatari side Al Sadd, wheeled away in celebration, but jubilation was cut short as replays showed he made his run a fraction of a second too early.
One can’t help but wonder, however, where the goal would have ranked in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations if it was allowed to stand.
How the game went
The 2019 AFCON winners would rue not extending their lead, as Angola were offered a chance to get an equalizer in the 68th minute from the penalty spot.
Angola’s Mabululu saw his effort come off the post, but he was on hand to slot in the rebound to make it 1-1.
Both nations were unable to find a winner as they settled for a point in the Group D encounter, a result that offers either Burkina Faso or Mauritania the chance to go top of the group with a win on Tuesday.
