  • For the second year running, Lionel Messi clinched the FIFA The Best Award
  • A number of high-profile stars picked Messi as their choice for the FIFA Best prize
  • The FIFA Best Awards is decided by votes from captains, coaches, media and fans

On Monday, January 15, Lionel Messi was crowned the best player in the world by FIFA at a lavish awards ceremony in London.

Messi narrowly surpassed Erling Haaland and former PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe, who secured second and third positions, respectively.

The Argentine maestro, achieving the distinction of being the first player to win the coveted prize while playing in the MLS, found himself tied with Haaland at 48 scoring points, while Mbappe trailed with 35, Eurosport reports.

Despite the deadlock, the Inter Miami star emerged victorious over Manchester City's prolific goal scorer, courtesy of receiving more first-choice nominations from national team captains (13 to 11).

Messi's victory surprised many, as it deviated from the expectation that the award should solely consider achievements within the calendar year, as noted by Sportskeeda.

However, as per article 12 in the FIFA The Best Awards, when two players tie for votes, the winner is determined by the highest number of five-point scores from the votes cast by the men's national team captains.

While some may view Messi's triumph, his third overall and second consecutive success, as contentious, the governing rules vindicate his glory.

Sports Brief delves into the top football stars whose placement of the 8-time Ballon d'Or winner in the first position secured Messi another personal accolade.

Fans disappointed as Messi wins FIFA Best

Sports Brief also reported that football fans took to social media to express their discontent with Messi winning the FIFA Best Men’s Player Award for 2023 over Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

The frustration arose from Messi and Haaland both having 48 scoring points, while Mbappe secured 35.

There was a surprise when Messi was announced as the winner, as it diverged from the expectation that the award should primarily consider accomplishments within the calendar year.
